UAM Breaks Attendance Record During College Preview Event

On March 9, nearly 650 prospective students visited the University of Arkansas at Monticello for the annual Weevil Welcome: College Preview Day.
High school juniors and seniors from Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas visited UAM’s campus, making this year’s crowd the largest in the history of the annual event, which was first held in 2005.
The UAM Office of Admissions hosted the event, which offers high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to learn about programs of study at UAM, the UAM College of Technology-Crossett (UAM-CTC) and the UAM College of Technology-McGehee (UAM-CTM), as well as financial aid and scholarship opportunities, residence life and more, while meeting UAM, UAM-CTC and UAM-CTM faculty, staff and current students.
Mary Whiting, director of Admissions and Recruiting at UAM, reflected on the event, stating, “Weevil Welcome was a wonderful opportunity for prospective students to meet faculty, staff and students from all three of our campuses. Students and parents were very responsive to our scholarship packages and the opportunity for students to be in smaller classes.”
According to Whiting, this year’s participants showed interest in a variety of academic areas, including cybersecurity, nursing, exercise science, business and technical programs, and many who have not decided on a major used the opportunity to meet with all academic areas. Students were also eager to learn about competitive teams on campus, including esports, trap shooting, rodeo, bass fishing and athletics.
Dr. Peggy Doss, chancellor of UAM, stated, “We are thrilled to have welcomed such exceptional young people to UAM’s campus to see the lively and warm community we have. UAM has a vast and rich array of opportunities for students to learn, grow and discover while gaining the knowledge and skills that will allow them to thrive in their professional and personal lives. Our incredible faculty and staff are here to support and encourage our students, and it was a privilege to have so many prospective students, full of energy, motivation and fresh ideas, visit our campus.”
UAM will hold a priority registration event for summer 2026 and fall 2026 classes on April 13 and April 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Student Success Center. This event is for new first-time freshman students and new transfer students who plan to attend UAM’s Monticello campus, UAM-CTC or UAM-CTM. Interested prospective students should RSVP for the event on the UAM Admission Event webpage.
