Retired UAM English Professor Wins National Book Prize

Book of Lamentations

Dr. Robert Moore, who is also known as Red Hawk and publishes under the name, was recently named the winner of the 2023 Bitter Oleander Press Library of Poetry Award for his poetry collection “Book of Lamentations.” Dr. Moore, professor emeritus of English at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, retired from the university in 2020.

Sponsored by Bitter Oleander Press, the annual prize carries a cash award and book publication. Red Hawk’s book was selected from more than 350 entries. The central concern of this competition is to find and publish poetry books that are “…more integrated in the natural world…a language that helps define the same particulars in nature that exist in each of us….”

According to Red Hawk, love of the Earth as a core spiritual practice has always been one of his central themes; others include non-judgmental love; aging as a spiritual practice; and the Conscious growth of the Soul via the awakening of Conscience.

“Book of Lamentations” was published in January 2024 and is available for purchase at www.bitteroleander.com.

Red Hawk is the author of 10 other books of poetry and two books on the spiritual practice of self remembering and self observation. He may be reached at moorer@uamont.edu.
