Richard’s Senior Art Thesis Exhibition at UAM Glassblock Gallery

Adrien Richard - Milla Killa

Adrien Richard’s senior art thesis exhibition, “Deferred States,” will be held from February 5 through February 9 in the Glassblock Gallery in the Fred J. Taylor Library and Technology Center at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. A public reception will be held on Thursday, February 8, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. While Richard graduated from UAM in 2019 with degrees in art and psychology, his planned senior exhibition was canceled due to the pandemic.

Richard’s exhibition focuses on portraits that show his interest in “messing around with emotional states of being.” He begins with initial sketches as unplanned doodles to capture individuality of characters. Through further studies, expressions are refined with colors that are vibrant and discordant. More recent paintings express his interest in folly of face and of unplanned textural processes. “I have no desire to capture perfection in portraits, as it has been done 100s and 1000s of times. I desire to capture order and disorder with goofy, playful, warped faces that could be both pleasing and unsatisfying,” Richard states.

The Glassblock Gallery’s hours are Mondays from 9 to 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m.; Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
