UAM Holds Fall Commencement Exercises

UAM Fall Commencement 2024

The University of Arkansas at Monticello held its fall commencement exercises on Friday, December 13, in the Steelman Field House. Dr. Peggy Doss, chancellor of UAM, recognized graduates completing academic credentials ranging from master’s degrees to technical certificates during the ceremony.

Justin Howard, campus minister for the Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship at UAM, provided the invocation, and Scott Bearden, associate professor of music and director of choral activities at UAM, sang the national anthem and alma mater.

Dr. Donald Bobbitt, president of the University of Arkansas System, spoke during the ceremony, providing greetings on behalf of the system. He congratulated graduates on their accomplishments and offered advice, stating, “You have been given a great gift by this faculty and institution through your education. In the weeks, months and years ahead, I hope that you will use that education to create more justice and hope for the future.”

Dr. Doss also congratulated the graduates and their families and friends, stating, “Today, we gather to celebrate a significant milestone in your lives. It is the culmination of years of effort, perseverance and growth.”

“As you take these next steps, remember that your learning does not end here. Life will continue to teach you, and the pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong journey…. Your time at UAM has instilled in you not only technical and academic skills but also values of integrity, empathy, work ethic and a commitment to excellence. Carry these values with you and work tirelessly to make your community, state and nation stronger and prosperous. Today, we celebrate not just what you have achieved but all you will become,” Dr. Doss told graduates. She also made special acknowledgments of several groups of graduates, including those who were first-generation college students, parents, active in campus organizations or members of the armed forces.

Dr. Doss also recognized Dr. Bobbitt for his upcoming retirement after 13 years of leading the University of Arkansas System, conferring upon him the title of Honorary Boll Weevil. “We are honored to forever include you as part of our Boll Weevil family,” she said during the presentation.
